AFP–NM Applauds Bipartisan Senate Vote Defeating SB 18
SANTA FE, NM — Americans for Prosperity–New Mexico (AFP-NM) today welcomed the Senate’s decision to reject SB 18, a bill that would have raised energy costs for New Mexican families and businesses while putting local jobs and future investment at risk.
The bill failed on the Senate floor by a 23–19 vote, reflecting growing bipartisan concern about policies that could make energy less reliable and more expensive for hardworking New Mexicans.
“Today’s vote is a win for New Mexico families, workers, and communities,” said Sarah Hetemi, State Director for AFP-NM. “SB 18 threatened to increase energy costs and create uncertainty at a time when many New Mexicans are already feeling the pressure of rising prices. Senators chose to put people, paychecks, and opportunity first.”
AFP–NM thanked Senate Republicans for their leadership throughout the debate and for standing strong on behalf of taxpayers, energy reliability, and working families.
The organization also recognized the bipartisan coalition that ultimately defeated the measure, including Sens. Joseph Cervantes, Roberto “Bobby” J. Gonzales, Martin Hickey, Antonio “Moe” Maestas, George Muñoz, Benny Shendo Jr., and Shannon Pinto, who joined Republicans in voting against SB 18.
“This vote shows that when lawmakers focus on real-world impacts — good-paying jobs, affordable energy, and economic stability — common sense can still prevail,” Hetemi added. “We appreciate every senator who stood up for New Mexicans today.”
